What US document do you need for UAE?

Step 1 of 4

What stage is your US document at?

US → UAE: why apostille alone is not enough

❌ US apostille only Not accepted by the UAE as final authentication
✅ Full chain Notarization → Sec. of State → US State Dept. apostille → UAE Embassy → UAE MOFA (+ Arabic translation)

Who needs this service?

💼 American professionals moving to the UAE

UAE employment visas require US documents that have gone through the full legalization chain (US apostille, then UAE Embassy legalization). Background checks, diplomas, and professional certifications from US institutions often also need Arabic translation.

🏢 US businesses in UAE free zones

American companies registering in Dubai or Abu Dhabi free zones need legalized corporate documents: US apostille from the Secretary of State or US State Dept., then UAE Embassy legalization. Some free zones also request UAE MOFA attestation.

👨‍👩‍👧 American families in the UAE

US birth certificates, marriage certificates, and divorce decrees used in UAE family proceedings need legalization and Arabic translation. UAE courts are specific about authentication standards — we ensure your documents meet current UAE requirements.

Required documents

DocumentIssuing authorityEstimated timeNotes
Original US document (notarized) Issuing authority + US notary public Before process starts Documents must be notarized before apostille submission.
Secretary of State authentication (for state documents) Secretary of State — relevant US state 5–15 business days Required for state-issued documents before US State Dept. apostille.
US Apostille (State Dept. or Secretary of State) U.S. Department of State or Secretary of State 1–3 weeks The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so the US apostille is only the home-country authentication step. It must be followed by UAE Embassy legalization.
UAE Embassy / Consulate legalization Embassy of the UAE in Washington, D.C. (or a UAE Consulate) Varies The UAE Embassy legalizes the document after the US authentication. Fees and processing depend on the mission.
Certified Arabic translation (if required) UAE-accepted certified translator 2–3 business days Requirements vary by recipient: for UAE MOFA, originals in Arabic or English are accepted, or a legally certified translation; many recipient entities (employment, family law, business registration) still ask for certified Arabic translation. We confirm what your specific recipient needs.
UAE MOFA attestation UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Varies Once the document is in the UAE, MOFA attestation is the final step for most uses. We advise on your specific case.

How the process works

1

We assess the full chain your UAE purpose requires: US authentication, UAE Embassy legalization, Arabic translation and UAE MOFA attestation. Employment, business, and family matters have different requirements.

2

We arrange notarization and state-level authentication for documents that require it before the federal apostille.

3

We obtain the US apostille — from the Secretary of State (state-issued documents) or the US State Dept. (federal documents) — and then submit the document to the UAE Embassy for legalization.

4

We arrange certified Arabic translation. If your UAE purpose requires MOFA attestation in the UAE, we coordinate that additional step as well.

IE
Indian Expat, Hong Kong

from India to France

Apostille
The problem was…

An Indian expat living in Hong Kong had their Indian birth certificate notarized and apostilled by Hong Kong authorities, but France rejected it.

We solved it…

Documents can only be apostilled by the competent authority of the country that originally issued them. The applicant had to restart the process in India.

Result

In this example, the application was resubmitted with the correct apostille from India — the issuing country's competent authority.

CA
California Applicant

from USA to International

Apostille
The problem was…

A private affidavit notarized by a California notary was rejected for a state apostille because the notary stamped their seal on a blank white space instead of over the printed text of the affidavit.

We solved it…

The applicant had to reprint a fresh original of the private affidavit and ensure the notary followed state-specific seal placement guidelines perfectly before resubmitting.

Result

In this example, the document was resubmitted with the correct notary seal placement for the state office to review.

WS
Wrong State Apostille

from USA to Mexico

Apostille
The problem was…

A user paid a third-party service for a California birth certificate apostille, but received a Kansas apostille attached by a proxy notary, which was rejected in Mexico.

We solved it…

The applicant had to dispute the credit card charge and apply properly directly through the California Secretary of State.

Result

In this example, the fix is to dispute the third-party charge and apply directly through the California Secretary of State.

Frequently asked questions

Does the UAE accept US apostilles on their own?

No. The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so a US apostille alone is not final authentication. The usual chain is notarization → Secretary of State → US State Dept. apostille → UAE Embassy legalization → UAE MOFA attestation in the UAE.

Which UAE purposes need more than the US apostille?

All of them: the apostille is only the US step. UAE Embassy legalization is required, and authorities such as the Ministry of Human Resources or free zone registrars commonly also require UAE MOFA attestation. We assess your specific UAE purpose.

Does the UAE still require Arabic translation of US documents?

It depends on the recipient. For UAE MOFA, originals in Arabic or English are accepted, or a legally certified translation; in practice many recipient entities for employment visas, business registration, and legal proceedings still ask for certified Arabic translation. Translation is in addition to legalization, not a replacement. We confirm the requirement for your specific use and provide combined legalization + translation packages where needed.

How long does UAE authentication of US documents take?

Typically: notarization (1–2 days) + Secretary of State (5–15 days) + federal apostille for FBI-style documents (by mail, currently within five weeks from receipt; the seven-business-day in-person option applies only to specific eligibility criteria) + UAE Embassy legalization + Arabic translation (2–3 days) — usually several weeks in total, depending on the UAE mission.

My US document was apostilled for another country — can I use the same apostille for UAE?

The apostille itself is not country-specific, so an apostille obtained for, say, Spain is a valid US-side authentication for the UAE too. It is still only the first step: the UAE Embassy legalization must follow, and the document and apostille must be kept together.
