What do you need for the UAE?

Step 1 of 4

What stage is your document at?

How UAE document authentication works

The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. Documents for use in the UAE therefore go through a multi-step consular legalization chain — notarization, state or national authentication, foreign ministry authentication, then UAE Embassy legalization. Depending on the country, this can take several weeks.

❌ Apostille only An apostille alone is not accepted by the UAE as final authentication
✅ Full legalization chain Notarization → home-country authentication → UAE Embassy → UAE MOFA (+ Arabic translation if needed)

The UAE also requires Arabic translation for many purposes. We confirm the exact requirement for your case.

Who needs this service?

💼 Professionals relocating to the UAE

UAE employment visas require authenticated documents. Background checks, diplomas, and professional certifications from the US and other countries need consular legalization and often Arabic translation before UAE submission.

🏢 Businesses registering in the UAE

Company documents used for UAE free zone or mainland registration require full legalization, and UAE MOFA attestation is often needed as well. We advise on your specific registration requirements.

👨‍👩‍👧 Families and personal matters

Marriage, divorce, and family-related documents used in the UAE often require legalization and Arabic translation. UAE family courts are specific about document authentication standards.

Required documents

Original document Issuing authority Before process starts The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille alone is not accepted as final authentication. The document must go through the full consular legalization chain.
Home-country authentication (notary / state or national authority / foreign ministry) Notary and competent authority in issuing country Per the processing time published by the competent authority of the issuing country, confirmed per case via the current official channel The document is notarized where needed and then authenticated by the foreign ministry (or equivalent authority) of the country that issued it.
UAE Embassy / Consulate legalization UAE Embassy or Consulate in the issuing country Varies The UAE diplomatic mission legalizes the document after home-country authentication. Requirements and fees depend on the mission.
Certified Arabic translation (if required) Qualified translator (UAE-accepted) 2–3 business days The UAE often requires certified Arabic translation for documents used in employment, business registration, and family law matters.
UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation UAE MOFA Varies Once the document is in the UAE, MOFA attestation is the final step for most uses. We advise on whether this applies to your case.

How the process works

1

The UAE is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so each case needs a careful assessment. We confirm exactly what your specific UAE purpose requires: the full legalization chain, translation and MOFA attestation.

2

We obtain notarization where needed and authentication from the correct authority in the issuing country (for US documents: state and US State Dept. authentication; for others: the foreign ministry or equivalent).

3

We arrange legalization by the UAE Embassy or Consulate and, if your UAE purpose requires it, certified Arabic translation by UAE-accepted translators.

4

Your legalized document (and translation if needed) is delivered for evaluation by the receiving UAE entity, without guaranteeing acceptance. For cases requiring UAE MOFA attestation after arrival, we coordinate that step as well.

Real UAE document cases

IE
Indian Expat, Hong Kong

from India to France

Apostille
The problem was…

An Indian expat living in Hong Kong had their Indian birth certificate notarized and apostilled by Hong Kong authorities, but France rejected it.

We solved it…

Documents can only be apostilled by the competent authority of the country that originally issued them. The applicant had to restart the process in India.

Result

In this example, the application was resubmitted with the correct apostille from India — the issuing country's competent authority.

CA
California Applicant

from USA to International

Apostille
The problem was…

A private affidavit notarized by a California notary was rejected for a state apostille because the notary stamped their seal on a blank white space instead of over the printed text of the affidavit.

We solved it…

The applicant had to reprint a fresh original of the private affidavit and ensure the notary followed state-specific seal placement guidelines perfectly before resubmitting.

Result

In this example, the document was resubmitted with the correct notary seal placement for the state office to review.

WS
Wrong State Apostille

from USA to Mexico

Apostille
The problem was…

A user paid a third-party service for a California birth certificate apostille, but received a Kansas apostille attached by a proxy notary, which was rejected in Mexico.

We solved it…

The applicant had to dispute the credit card charge and apply properly directly through the California Secretary of State.

Result

In this example, the fix is to dispute the third-party charge and apply directly through the California Secretary of State.

Frequently asked questions

Is the UAE a party to the Hague Apostille Convention?

No. The United Arab Emirates is not a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille is not accepted as final authentication for the UAE. Documents still go through consular legalization.

What is the legalization chain for the UAE?

Typically: notarization where required, authentication by the competent authority or foreign ministry of the issuing country, legalization by the UAE Embassy or Consulate, and then attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs once the document is in the UAE. We confirm the exact chain for your case.

Can I use an apostille for UAE documents?

An apostille alone is not enough, because the UAE does not take part in the Convention. In Hague member countries the apostille is simply the home-country authentication step that comes before UAE Embassy legalization.

Does the UAE still require Arabic translation?

Yes. The UAE commonly requires certified Arabic translation for employment visas, business registration, and legal proceedings. The translation does not replace legalization — both are often required. We offer combined legalization + Arabic translation packages.

Does it matter whether my country is a Hague member?

It matters for the home-country step only. Hague member countries issue apostilles; non-members use a longer chain. In both cases the UAE Embassy legalization step is still required for documents going to the UAE.

How long does UAE document authentication take?

The total depends on the issuing country and the UAE mission, because each step follows the published timelines of its own competent authority: home-country authentication, UAE Embassy legalization and MOFA legalization. We confirm the current official timings of each step at case review, plus 2–3 business days for the Arabic translation if needed. No private provider can guarantee a government authority's turnaround.
