Vietnam: Hague Apostille Party Since 11 September 2026

Updated: April 2026 · Written by the Apostilla Antecedentes team

Viet Nam is a Hague Convention party. Vietnamese documents going abroad and foreign documents going into Vietnam take an apostille where the Convention applies between the two countries; Embassy chains remain only where it does not (for example UAE, Qatar, Kuwait).

What is your Vietnam legalization situation?

Step 1 of 4

What is your situation?

Vietnam: apostille where the Convention applies, consular chain elsewhere

Since 11 September 2026 Vietnam is a Contracting Party. For Contracting Parties, an apostille from the issuing country\'s competent authority is the standard final step; some states have lodged objections to recent accessions, so we check each pair. For non-party destinations the Vietnam MOFA + Embassy of destination chain still applies.

Who needs this service?

💼 Vietnamese workers going to South Korea, Japan, and other countries

Vietnam is a major labor export country. Vietnamese documents take an apostille for Contracting Parties where the Convention applies; for non-party destinations, Vietnam MOFA attestation + Embassy of destination country legalization.

🏢 Foreign businesses registering in Vietnam

Companies from the US, EU, South Korea, and Japan investing in Vietnam use an apostille on corporate documents where the Convention applies; the Vietnamese Embassy chain is only for origins where it does not.

💑 International couples marrying in Vietnam

Foreigners marrying Vietnamese nationals need personal documents apostilled where the Convention applies (Embassy-legalized otherwise) for Vietnamese civil registry purposes.

How the process works

2

We obtain the appropriate local certification — provincial/ministry level in Vietnam (outbound) or home country authentication (inbound).

3

The key middle step: Vietnam MOFA for outbound, or Vietnamese Embassy in your home country for inbound.

4

Vietnamese translation for inbound documents, destination language translation for outbound. Complete set delivered.

Real Vietnam legalization cases

IE
Indian Expat, Hong Kong

from India to France

Apostille
The problem was…

An Indian expat living in Hong Kong had their Indian birth certificate notarized and apostilled by Hong Kong authorities, but France rejected it.

We solved it…

Documents can only be apostilled by the competent authority of the country that originally issued them. The applicant had to restart the process in India.

Result

In this example, the application was resubmitted with the correct apostille from India — the issuing country's competent authority.

CA
California Applicant

from USA to International

Apostille
The problem was…

A private affidavit notarized by a California notary was rejected for a state apostille because the notary stamped their seal on a blank white space instead of over the printed text of the affidavit.

We solved it…

The applicant had to reprint a fresh original of the private affidavit and ensure the notary followed state-specific seal placement guidelines perfectly before resubmitting.

Result

In this example, the document was resubmitted with the correct notary seal placement for the state office to review.

WS
Wrong State Apostille

from USA to Mexico

Apostille
The problem was…

A user paid a third-party service for a California birth certificate apostille, but received a Kansas apostille attached by a proxy notary, which was rejected in Mexico.

We solved it…

The applicant had to dispute the credit card charge and apply properly directly through the California Secretary of State.

Result

In this example, the fix is to dispute the third-party charge and apply directly through the California Secretary of State.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vietnam still a non-Hague country?

No. The Apostille Convention entered into force for Viet Nam on 11 September 2026. Apostille now applies between Viet Nam and other Contracting Parties, subject to any objections lodged by individual states to recent accessions, which we check for each issuing–destination pair. Consular legalization remains for countries where the Convention does not apply.

Does neighboring China's 2023 Hague accession affect Vietnam?

No direct effect — each country's status is separate. China (in force 7 November 2023) and Viet Nam (in force 11 September 2026) are both Contracting Parties; China never left the Convention.

What is the chain for Vietnamese workers going to South Korea?

Vietnamese workers going to South Korea: (1) employer/provincial certification in Vietnam, (2) Vietnam MOFA attestation, (3) South Korean Embassy Hanoi legalization. South Korea has specific certification requirements for Vietnamese workers under bilateral labor agreements.

How long does Vietnam authentication take?

Apostille route: typically a few days to 2 weeks. Where MOFA attestation and Embassy legalization are needed: Vietnam MOFA 5–10 business days + Embassy of destination country 5–15 business days + translation 3–5 days, approximately 3–5 weeks.

Can Vietnam legalization be managed from outside Vietnam?

For outbound Vietnamese documents: we coordinate through our Hanoi/Ho Chi Minh City partners. For inbound foreign documents: we coordinate through your home country with the Vietnamese Embassy there. Both directions can be managed remotely.
